Yushukan is a style of Goju Ryu that applies the old ways of training in a practical way for today's world. We cater for ages 7 years and up and families are welcome.

We train in traditional methods to learn the timeless self defense principles of Goju Ryu karate that have been passed down through the ages. We seek to understand what the masters of old knew about combat and how to best protect oneself from someone wishing to do us harm. We do this through many ways but the most unique is how we read and study kata like a text book and bring it to life in the dojo.
The name Yushukan means school of excellence and this is sybolized in our logo with the japanese kanji for excellence in the centre of 5 circles.
The 5 circles stand for 5 elements we or principles that we beleive in and flow through everything we do.
the five elements are..
1. Shuhari - The Japanese path to mastery.
2. Kaizen - The Japanese principle of constant pursuit of learning
3. Mind - Developing good character through training
4. Body - Developing a strong healthy body that's able to protect oneself
5. Spirit - Developing the never give up attitude through focus, perseverance and discipline

Many martial arts practitioners have been practicing the kata for many years without truly delving into 'why' they are used or 'why' they were even invented. I myself was one of these practitioners until I started looking deeper into kata and learning its true meaning. This is when the light bulb came on and karate suddenly had a whole new meaning.

Our classes contain methods of training fundamentals, fitness training and dojo sparring however our overarching goal is to be able to use our kata and bring it to life so it has meaning, purpose and can be applied in a distress situation.
Yushukan training is available for students 7yrs and above. Families are welcome to train together.

    Yushukan is a great form of karate. It’s a family friendly environment for students of all ages and skill level. The application takes it to another level. Sensei Sam has a way with analogies that helps everyone understand.

    Everyone should join
    Karate teaches you vitally important life and physical skills that you won't believe could ever come from Karate. Mundane examples of carrying buckets to having to defend yourself should you need to. Regardless of the application, Karate teaches you not only how to punch and kick, but also how to think. Yushukan delivers this beautifully with a friendly and knowledgeable instructor and family-like club-goers. 10/10 would recommend.

    Attention to detail
    As somebody that has a deep love of Goju Ryu I can attest to the attention to detail that Sensei Sam brings. Whether a complete beginner or a practitioner that is looking to further their art there is the opportunity to grow in this beautiful & traditional martial art.

    Karate is for everyone
    I wanted to write a review about Sensei Sam Seigers with whom I've been training with since 2015. I have met some amazing people and made great friends at the Ocean Shores dojo. Sensei Sam Seigers is motivating and supportive, and challenges each student to maximize their potential whether they are an adult or child. I'm as fit and flexible as I have been in 20 years and can recommend karate to anyone interested. My training has been interrupted through Covid-19, but I am looking forward to getting back to the dojo, particularly training with Sensei Sam.

    Great activity and a great mentor
    Sam has been our sons karate sensei for more than 2 years. Goju-style karate has been great for our boys focus and balance. Sam has high expectations and is fantastic with the kids. In addition to karate they learn respect, discipline and the reward of hard work. Happily recommend.

    Yushukan Karate
    I have trained under Sensei Sam for the past 5 years. I have enjoyed the training and the fitness i have gained. Karate is a great way to develop self discipline as well as self confidence. The best benefit is gaining the art of self defence which in this day and age is a plus. I highly recommend this activity.

    Yushukan has a nice balance of strong foundations in traditional Goju Ryu and modern application, It is perfect for the modern world. With over 20 years experience in the karate world and great people skills Sensei Sam Seigers is great to learn from.

    I thoroughly endorse the art of karate. I have enjoyed the training since it opened up in Mullumbimby 5 years ago.The training enables the student to gain self confidence and self discipline as well as self -defence . It is a friendly club with a range of ages, the eldest being 66.

    Awesome karate
    The reason my boy does karate, over and above the self discipline and knowing how to protect yourself, is for this instructor. He has such an amazingly positive affect on the kids and relates to them in ways other instructors often can’t. He captures and keeps their attention and makes them feel comfortable and confident. My boy has been with him 3 years and we couldn’t be happier.
