IsIce Skating a great activity for your kid(s)?
Do your kids have energy to burn? Don’t want to exercise in the heat? Ice skating might be the sport for them! Your kids can get plenty of exercise, develop lower body and core strength and keep cool at the same time.
Other benefits of ice skating may be:
Improved sense of balance
Can improve posture
Great social activity
Good opportunity for Aussie kids to get involved in a cold weather winter sport when it’s hot outdoors
Low impact so there may be less risk of injuries compared with other, higher impact sports
Is your child afraid of getting a few bumps and bruises? Although ice skating is generally considered safe, the odd fall is inevitable so if your child is the nervous type they may be better suited to kids activities that are a bit more stable.
Get your kid to start learning Ice Skating!
Not sure what age to start? Kids as young as three can have a go at ice skating on an indoor rink although they probably won’t have the co-ordination to perform any sophisticated moves until they are at least four or five. It is a good idea to stay within arm’s reach of very young children, or hold their hand until they are confident skaters.
Is your child interested in learning more? Group beginners ice skating lessons are available at most ice rinks and will generally cost around $15 - $30 per lesson which includes skate hire. Individual tuition costs more but is good for kids who are a bit older or more experienced and want to take their skill development seriously.
Are you worried on your child getting injured? Concerned parents can buy protective gear including helmets and knee pads to help safeguard against injuries. Don’t forget to outfit your child to stay warm but keep clothing layered and lightweight so it doesn’t impede your child’s movement.
If your child is not the figure skating type, there are plenty of other activities for kids at the ice skating rink. Ice hockey is a fast and highly competitive sport and speed skating is becoming increasingly popular. Many ice rinks hold social events such as ice discos and parties as a chance for kids to have fun and make new friends.
Ice Skating stars and events not to be missed?
The Australian figure skating championships are held in December every year and are a great chance to see local stars such as National 2010 figure skating champion and Olympic team member Cheltzie Lee in action.
Get your kids involved in this great sport for a chance to have fun and improve their fitness!

Basic skills that they can learn in ice skating lessons include balancing on the ice skates, and then eventually, moving from one point to another.
After learning the basics of ice skating, your kids can advance to the different types of ice skating sports ? figure skating and ice hockey.
Figure skating
Figure skating can be considered as a dance sport. It is a choreographed performance done individually, by pairs, or by groups. The skaters are judged base on the techniques they've shown, their appearance, and their showmanship. Figure skating might appeal mostly to girls as they can be more graceful than boys, but anyone can learn figure skating.
Ice hockey
The principles of ice hockey are almost similar to regular hockey, only played on skating rinks. Ice hockey is a full contact sport, so protective equipment is required. The complete hockey gear includes a helmet. Shoulder pads, elbow pads, mouth guard, gloves, hockey pants, shin pads, skates, and a stick that is used to hit the rubber puck.
Get your kids to start ice skating?
Before introducing little kids to ice skating, it is best to introduce them to rolling skating first. Roller skating rinks can be found in sports centres and community centres. It is ideal because if ever the kids fall, they won't get wet or cold. Kids who know how to roller skate can easily learn to ice skate.
Ice skates can be rented from the ice skating venue, but you can also buy your kids their own ice skating shoes from sports shops. Recommended ice skating outfit includes warm clothes and mittens or gloves. Girl figure skaters wear ice skating dress instead so they can move easily. Ice skating attire can be at sports shops, and skate shops. Ice skating dress and figure skating attire can be bought at dance stores.
When skating on natural skating rinks such as frozen ponds and lakes, just let your kids skate on surfaces approved by local authorities. Following signs, rules, and regulations is also a must. Look for signs that say that the ice is thick and hard enough. The recommended are for ice skating, especially for kids, is around the edge of the lake, where the water is shallow and the ice is thicker.

Will your kids enjoyRollerskating?
Are you looking for activities for kids that incorporate fun and great exercise? If they enjoy a challenge and don’t mind a fall or two why not try rollerskating? Whether your kids are theatrical, competitive or just like the sensation of speed rollerskating may have something to offer them. The benefits of rollerskating can include:
Improved fitness, particularly cardiovascular
Improved balance
Cheap - just purchase or hire skates and you’re on your way!
Versatile ? lots of different types of skating to try
Can be a great mode of transportation
It’s an outdoor and indoor activity
Social ? organised events such as roller discos allow kids to make new friends
There are two main types of rollerskates:
Quad skates (traditional roller boots with 4 wheels and a break on the front ? good for young kids and beginners)
Inline skates or roller blades (row of wheels down the middle of the skate and you stop by leaning back ? good for speed)
Rollerskating can be a great activity for kids from 3 years and up. It is important that kids wear appropriate safety gear when rollerskating including pads, knee guards and a helmet. Boots and safety gear can be bought or hired for a low fee. As far as kids activities go, rollerskating is quite inexpensive.
How can you organise Rollerskating lessons and activities for your kids?
Are you looking for somewhere your kids can learn to rollerskate and participate in rollerskating activities with supervision? As well as specialised skate clubs many leisure centres offer rollerskating lessons and events such as roller discos, roller derbys and sporting events. Lessons usually cost around $10-$20 per session and casual visits to a skating rink is around $5-$10 a session. Once kids have a good level of control over their skates they might like to take to the ramp or skate park or get involved in events such as roller hockey or inline speed skating. With so many different rollerskating activities to choose from your child will never get bored!

Australia, known for its sporting culture, has a deep love for soccer. As parents and caregivers, encouraging pre school sports in children to play soccer at home is a fantastic way to nurture their physical health and team spirit. From toddlers to pre-schoolers, these 10 soccer games are perfect for keeping your kids active and entertained.
Soccer at home setup
1. Obstacle Course Soccer: Transform your backyard into a mini soccer field with a twist. Set up a simple obstacle course using cones, hoops, and small hurdles. Children can dribble the ball through the course, enhancing their agility and ball control. It's a great way for kids to develop their soccer skills in a fun, engaging environment.
2. Soccer Bowling:Line up some empty plastic bottles at one end of the yard. Give your child a soccer ball and let them try to knock down the bottles by kicking the ball. It's a simple yet exciting game that helps improve their aiming skills.
3. One-on-One Mini Matches: Encourage your child to engage in one-on-one mini soccer matches with a sibling or a friend. Use small goalposts or mark areas as goals. These mini-matches are excellent for teaching kids the basics of soccer while also developing their competitive spirit.
4. Treasure Hunt Soccer: Create a treasure map and hide small items around your yard. The challenge for your kids is to find these treasures using a soccer ball. They must dribble the ball to each location on the map. This game is not only fun but also enhances their problem-solving skills.
5. Soccer Tag: A twist on the classic game of tag, Soccer Tag involves tagging others by hitting their legs gently with the soccer ball. It's an energetic game that will have kids laughing and running around, perfect for developing their stamina and coordination.
6. Goalkeeper Challenge:Set up a goal and take turns being the goalkeeper. The child tries to score goals while the parent or caregiver defends. This game is ideal for practicing shooting accuracy and goalkeeping skills, vital aspects of soccer.
7. Red Light, Green Light - Soccer Edition: Play Red Light, Green Light where children must dribble the ball towards the goal. When you say 'red light', they must stop dribbling immediately. This game teaches kids control over the ball and sharpens their listening skills.
8. Balloon Soccer: For younger children, especially toddlers, use a balloon instead of a soccer ball. It's lighter and moves slower, making it easier for little ones to kick. Balloon Soccer is a fantastic way to introduce toddlers to the sport.
9. Passing Practice: Set up a target area and have your child practice passing the ball into it. This can be a simple circle drawn with chalk or a small box. The goal is to improve their passing accuracy, a crucial skill in soccer.
10. Solo Skills Challenge: Create a list of soccer skills like dribbling, juggling, or shooting. Have your child practice each skill for a set amount of time. You can turn this into a fun challenge by keeping score of their successes.
Encouraging Active Lifestyles
These soccer games are more than just play; they're a stepping stone to developing a lifelong love for sports and physical activity. As a parent or caregiver in Australia, you play a pivotal role in fostering this. By incorporating soccer into your child's playtime, you're helping them build physical skills, confidence, and teamwork abilities.
Remember, the key is to keep it fun and engaging. Don't worry about strict rules or perfect techniques. The goal is to get your kids moving, laughing, and enjoying soccer. So, roll out that soccer ball and let the games begin!

Will Your Kids Enjoy Science Centre Activities?
Do your kids love to learn and play? They will probably enjoy a trip to a science centre. Packed full of kids activities, interactive exhibits and multimedia games, your children can have fun learning on science from A to Z.
Not sure your kids would enjoy a science centre? Here are some of the benefits:
Educational experience - kids can learn on nature, space, technology and much more.
Indoors - good for rainy or hot days when kids can't play outside.
Creative - lots of opportunities for children to use their imaginations to create and build.
Builds team skills - games often have an element of co-operation or encourage kids to play in teams.
Worried your child will be bored? Even if they are not usually scientific there will probably be plenty to keep them interested including animations, interactive games and kids' workshops. Older kids might enjoy simulation games and many science centres have activities designed for kids who are very young. No matter what age, your child should find something to amuse and stimulate them. Some kids might not be able to concentrate for long periods of time and it might be best to plan a short visit for them.
Planning your first visit to the science centre? You might wish to avoid school holidays and weekends as they can get very busy. Many science centres have cafes and kids play areas and some have picnic areas for you to bring your own food. It is always a good idea to check before taking any food in. Flash photography is usually not allowed.
How Do I Organise Science Centre Activities for Kids?

Are casting agencies great for your kids?
Casting agencies for kids can help increase your children’s chances of getting big acting or modelling jobs. They can help develop your toddlers’ talent. Talent agents are perfect for kids who have parents with busy schedules, or parents that have little knowledge about the industry.
Casting agencies have three primary roles:
Guiding your kids through their career
Finding casting opportunities and auditions
Negotiating the terms and conditions for each project
When looking for the right agency, always bear in mind that not all of them are reputable. Beware of scams. Remember that casting agencies don’t ask for fees. They also don’t require your kids take modelling courses or acting lessons; although you have a choice of sending them to acting or modelling classes if you feel that they need these to hone their talent. Here are some tips that can help you look for trustworthy agents for child actors and models.
Ask for recommendations.
If you know stage parents who hired agents for their children, ask about their experience with the agency. Do they have success stories? How do they treat their talents?
Do some thorough research about the agencies you are considering.
The casting agencies in our ActiveActivities directory are all reputable, but would their environment work for your kid? Check their website to see what kind of services they provide and their specialisations. If your toddler is more of a model than an actor, and the agency you are checking is an acting agency, it is better to look for another one. We also suggest that you find out the specific criteria they are looking for.
Consider the number of children they represent.
The bigger the client base, the better. However, if the agency already represents a lot of kids similar to your child’s age, looks, and characteristics, his or her chance of getting landing a project might get reduced.
To determine the agency that can properly represent your child, you have to make sure that your child has chemistry with the agent.
Credible agencies incorporate fun activities for kids to their trainings and workshops so your kids can enjoy while learning.
Getting help from casting agencies does not guarantee acting or modelling work.
Agencies are usually approached by companies looking for talented kids. The agencies will then schedule the kids for auditions. If your child gets chosen, then you will be called. That’s how casting agencies earn since they don’t ask you for any fees. If the talent they are handling gets casted, they get a commission from the client, usually 30% of the talent fee.
Check our ActiveActivities directory for the list of casting agencies in Australia. We also have tips and suggestions for kids activities involving modelling for kids and acting for kids like lessons, classes, and workshops.
Safeguard your children’s future by hiring the right agent. They can get your kids to land international engagements!

Will Your Kids Enjoy Angling?
Do you ever wish your kids would just sit down and keep quiet for a while? If you are looking for fun and educational outdoor activities for kids that can also help promote good water sense and increase confidence why not give fishing a go?
The benefits of taking your kids fishing could include:
Teaches kids on marine wildlife and protecting our waterways
A chance to get out into nature - particularly advantageous for city kids
Relaxing and a great way to spend quality time with your children
Encourages respect for the environment
There are a number of different locations you can fish in, and whether you choose a river, the lake or the sea, it can be a fun and healthy family outing.
Kids love to spend time with their parents and if you have the kind of child who enjoys being outdoors and is capable of sitting quietly for a period of time, fishing can be a great kids activity and a bonding experience for everyone. Very young children may struggle to focus for long so fishing may not be suitable for them but once they can hold a rod, many kids enjoy having a go and you might be surprised how long they can concentrate for.
How to Organise Angling Activities with Your Kids
Before you take your kids angling it is important to check that fishing is permitted in your intended destination. Make sure you comply with any permit requirements and read up on what you are and aren't allowed to catch. You will need to make sure you have the right equipment or tackle including:
Fishing rod with a line and reel (used to catch the fish and wind it in)
Lures or baits (to attract the fish)
For those looking for a more formal experience, there are a number of angling clubs around Australia which can offer fishing trips and tuition as well as competitions and social events for anybody who is keen. Angling lessons can begin as young as 3 years of age and they usually cost around $10-$20 per lesson with a yearly club subscription (roughly $50 depending on the club).
Regardless of whether you are taking your kids to an angling club or just to the local river for the afternoon don't forget your sunscreen, hats and plenty of food and water.

Are your kids able to focus for a reasonable period of time? Table tennis takes focus and concentration and kids who are unable to concentrate may find it difficult. Most kids can start to play table tennis as soon as they are tall enough to reach above the table although their developing hand eye co-ordination may make it difficult for them to hit the ball. Table tennis is also relatively safe as kids activities go as the ball is very light weight. A table with an adjustable height can be a good solution for young kids who are keen to start.
How can you organise Table Tennis lessons and matches for your kids?
Table tennis activities for kids can be done either as structured lessons with a coach or by just having fun at home. Many people have table tennis tables in their house and this can be a great way to introduce kids to table tennis as well as a form of family entertainment. Once you know the basic rules of table tennis, you can play whenever you like!
Is your child looking for a more formal way to play? They might want to join a table tennis club which are a great way to make friends and play in a social environment and they can also organise tournaments and matches. Costs for table tennis lessons are around $30 per two hour session and programmes usually run during term time with extra sessions during holidays.
For a fun, fast paced and competitive contest, try table tennis. You may even end up with an Olympic athlete on your hands!

Over the years, the competitive landscape has increasingly grown more demanding and more often than not, it can be very stressful for kids. From more intensive curriculum and school assignments, social media, and competitive sports, various factors have a bearing on our children. Even though we might not always recognise how these stimuli affect them, kids often are influenced, and typically not in a good way. Ways we can capture ours kids may be suffering is noticing their behavior, anger, difficulty sleeping, defiance, avoidance, lack of focus and negativity."

Yoga is excellent at counteracting these pressures. When kids can grasp techniques of relaxation, inner fulfillment, and self-health, they are gifted with the ability to charter life’s challenging waters with a little more comfort, and a little less stress. Children can benefit from a plethora of advantages yoga therapy provides them, and probably more so than the way it helps adults as children are more open to change, their mindset is young and can more easily be guided in another direction.
Yoga therapy works with the seasons, using the meridian energy lines (think acupuncture with exercise) is when we work on specific needs, to bring balance, connection to our minds and bodies.
Kids’ Yoga Builds Confidence
In today’s ambitious environment, where achievements account for so much, kids might feel at times they do not live up to expectations when they can’t compete with their peers. Specific yoga moves enhances confidence and courage and allows children to accept and understand that each one’s body is different and that it is okay to have different learning abilities. Even simple yoga steps, like being able to touch the toes to building up to a “cool” pose, after practice and reaching their own goal, drives a sense of achievement and self-fulfillment.
Yoga Promotes a Stronger and Healthier Body
With a consistent practice that involves stretches, breathing exercises, and various poses, yoga strengthens the body and boosts coordination, flexibility and balance. Since children’s yoga enhances blood flow, stimulates motor development, and increases flexibility, it leads to a decrease in the risk of injury that could be sustained during several other physical activities such as sports. According to several studies conducted globally, a staggering 97% of teachers noticed a marked improvement in their students’ strength after regular yoga sessions.
Yoga Enhances Concentration
While yoga helps to increase attention, it can also boost the right kind of behavior as well. For instance, incorporating fun yoga sessions at home or even between classes in school helps kids to build better concentration and focus skills, which fosters better learning as a result.
Breathing Helps to Reduce Anxiety
When breathing is controlled, it motivates relaxation while at the same time increasing lung capacity, providing for an increase in energy levels and stimulating the body’s release of happy hormones. So kids feel calm, relaxed, and more in control as opposed to when their stress levels are high. Regardless of a child’s age, kids’ yoga helps them comprehend how they can employ breathing exercises to decrease anxiety if and when they are stressed out. When kids are more in control, they are calmer, and they feel more reassured.
Yoga Teaches Kids Mindfulness
Kids’ yoga helps to introduce mindfulness to children because the exercises align the mind and body. Often, children’s yoga sessions include stories to keep engagement levels high, and all my sessions are set with intention to include education and an inspirational message about confidence building, self-acceptance, self-worth, body awareness, respect, love and other important life skills or lessons.
Building positive mindsets will help transform kids’ behaviors and more importantly, will help them reduce stress by finding their peaceful inner sanctuary.

My name is David Bree, business owner and teacher at Breeswim.Breeswim was created in 2012 after 10 years working and travelling around Australia. I want to bring attention to Australian Learn to Swim as a service and give you some insights into the industry. Hopefully, as a parent or teacher, this blog will educate you with some basic information – from tips on choosing a swim school to changes you can make to achieve the most from your swimming lessons.
The Australian Learn to Swim industry leads the way as one of the best in the world. The climate, landscape and beaches make swimming lessons a necessity rather than a luxury. Each step taken by passionate industry experts pushes the boundaries of the learn to swim development and allows us as parents and teachers to benefit.
A few key things that I have noticed during my swim teaching career, is the consistent efforts of swimming schools wanting to stand out as the best program to achieve the fastest results.
One thing that may come as a surprise to you though, is that swim schools are not bound to a national curriculum – meaning really they could teach anything. This flexibility in industry practice leads to inconsistency in lesson quality from swim school to swim school and as newbie parents entering the industry, it’s difficult to know whether or not you are getting value from the lesson.
We enrol our children into swimming classes & lessons for many reasons and we continue to look for opportunities to give our children a head start. But a key differentiator between swim schools can simply be the acknowledgement that a child’s learning of independence, safety awareness and love of the water will progress in line with the child’s development capabilities.
I want to bring attention to realistic age group objectives (from 4 months old), and swimming activities, that can be implemented by any parent. Every child is different, but parents should understand and expect progress throughout their Learn to Swim participation.

Teaching our children (and ourselves) to recognise what is “normal” in our homes, schools, and local community can make it a lot easier to spot incongruities that may signal a potential danger or dangerous situation.
Dangerous situations that your child or teenager could be more aware of include:
- A darkened area that is normally lit.
- Door locks not in their expected state. Perhaps the storeroom door is normally locked but you notice it is unlocked.
- Someone approaching with a cricket bat but not dressed for sport or carrying a sports bag.
- Someone matching your pace as you walk down the street.
More difficult dangers to help your child or teengager to spot include:
- An injured or disabled person asking for help with packages. This is not to say that we should not offer assistance, but that help should be appropriate to ensure your own safety. Children can fetch a known adult to provide assistance rather than get directly involved.
- Similarly a request for assistance with sick child, a relative or the elderly could be used as an excuse or be legitimate call for help. Is the sick child actually present or is this just an excuse to get us to follow them?
By making an alternative offer, such as phoning for help or fetching someone else better qualified to assist can help us decide the level of threat depending upon the response offered. Is the person asking for help insistent upon us helping or accepting of help from others?
- We all like to help out someone with a lost dog or other pet, especially children.
Cons relating to a lost pet prey upon our willingness to jump in and help animals without due consideration to the person asking and their reason for our help. Children should offer to get help from an adult and not to assist themselves, particularly if there is any request to go with someone to help look for the pet.
By encouraging children to fetch adult help they will learn to be helpful, yet not put themselves closer to any potential danger.
Encourage kids and teens to become aware of their senses: sound, sight, touch, taste, smell and your 'sixth sense’.
When arriving home can you smell something that may indicate a stranger in the house?
Can you hear strange sounds or do you recognise familiar sounds that may be missing?
Improve your kid's memory of what is 'normal'
Enhance your child's awareness in their everyday environment - at home, school, in the street ... anywhere they spend a lot of time. Encourage them to observe their surroundings carefully and become aware of the nearest open store, bus stop, police station or hospital - this will help them access an escape route if they ever need it.
What can you do as a parent or carer?
Be aware of which neighbours are home at various times during the day.
Is your local police, fire or ambulance station open 24 hours?
Where is the nearest place to go for assistance or where your child could go to settle their nerves if they are being harrassed?
Prevention is better than cure - encourage your child or teenager to get to know their surroundings and understand what is ‘normal’ so that they can more easily recognise the abnormal.

Dance parties are guaranteed to tire your kids and their friends out - but not before they've had a huge amount of fun!

Will Your Kids Enjoy a Dance Party?
Do your children love movement and music? They will probably love a dance party for their birthday. Kids dance parties are great for confident kids who don't mind a lot of noise. If your child is the sensitive type they might prefer something calmer kids' activities. Dance parties provide kids with the opportunity to burn off some energy while having fun and improving their dance skills. Other benefits of dance parties include:
Improvement of co-ordination and motor skills including balance and rhythm;
Social interaction - dancing is a fun social activity;
Fitness - great for a cardiovascular workout;
Fun - best of all, dancing is fun!
Even very young children can enjoy dance parties, particularly with an entertainer or teacher to help them learn the moves. Add a theme or costumes and you can help promote imagination and role play too! Girls are usually more inclined towards dancing than boys but some types of hip hop or street dance can be appealing to both sexes.
Are you considering hosting a dance party event? Make sure you have enough space for your dancers to move freely without tripping over furniture or each other and that you have a good sound system and plenty of music.
How Do You Organise Dance Parties for Kids?
Overwhelmed at the thought of finding suitable activities for kids for your next party or event? A dance party doesn't have to be a huge event, you can just find some music your child likes, put on the stereo and let the kids dance the afternoon away. Dancing can also be incorporated into kids games such as musical statues.
Professional kids' entertainers and dance instructors can be found online or at your local dance academy. They will generally charge around $100 an hour for parties. Some child play centres and dance schools also host parties which might be an alternative if space is a bit limited.
What are you waiting for? Clear the furniture out of the way, crank up the stereo and let your kids dance the afternoon away!

1. Discipline and Focus
Karate instills discipline and focus in children from a young age. Through the structured routines and rules of the dojo (Karate school), kids learn the importance of listening, following instructions, and adhering to guidelines. This discipline transcends the training mats and influences their behavior in daily life—enhancing their attentiveness, perseverance, and ability to set and achieve goals.
2. Respect and Courtesy
Respect is a cornerstone of Karate philosophy. Children are taught to respect their Karate coaches and instructors, their fellow students, and themselves. This ethos of respect extends to their everyday interactions, teaching them to appreciate diversity, value others' opinions, and treat everyone with kindness and courtesy.
3. Confidence and Self-esteem
Karate empowers children by building their self-confidence and self-esteem. As they progress through belts and master new techniques, they gain a sense of accomplishment that boosts their confidence. They learn to believe in themselves, face challenges head-on, and overcome fears, setting a strong foundation for a successful future.
4. Physical Fitness and Well-being
Engaging in Karate improves a child's physical health and overall well-being. The training involves a combination of aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Kids develop agility, coordination, and balance, fostering a healthy lifestyle and laying the groundwork for a lifetime of good health habits.
5. Problem-solving and Critical Thinking
Karate isn't just about kicks and punches; it's a mental exercise too. Children learn to strategize, anticipate their opponent's moves, and adapt their techniques accordingly. This enhances their problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities, skills that are vital in both academic and personal spheres.
6. Setting and Achieving Goals
Karate provides a structured system of belts, giving children tangible goals to strive for. Each new belt represents progress and achievement, teaching kids the value of setting goals and working diligently to attain them. This goal-setting mentality translates into their academics and other extracurricular activities.
7. Emotional Regulation and Stress Relief
Karate encourages emotional regulation by providing an outlet for stress and pent-up energy. Children can channel their emotions positively through the martial art, which can help them manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. This emotional balance contributes to a happier, more stable child.
Conclusion
Enrolling your child in a Karate school not only equips them with self-defense skills but also enriches their life with invaluable life lessons. The guidance and mentorship from Karate coaches and instructors play a pivotal role in shaping your child's character and instilling virtues that will benefit them throughout their lives. Through discipline, respect, confidence, and physical fitness, Karate sets a strong foundation for Australian children to grow into responsible, resilient, and accomplished individuals. So, consider enrolling your child in a reputable Karate school today and watch them blossom into confident, respectful, and disciplined individuals ready to conquer life's challenges.

It can be difficult for a parent to watch your little one scream and cry as soon as they approach the class let alone enter the pool. There are children who take to the water straight-off and others may take a few lessons, even up to a couple of months before they start to feel comfortable in the water.
Swim instructors are generally trained to handle these situations, there are a few things that you can do to help make swimming lessons a more enjoyable experience for your child."

1. Preparing for day one of lessons
On the first occasion your child has been in the pool without you, the change can create uncertainty, and transition can be made easier with your support:
Talk about swimming classes & lessons a few weeks leading into the first lesson, so your child has a good idea of what to expect.
Explain to your little one they will be in the water with a teacher and other children, and mum and/or dad will be watching from the side of the pool.
Create some small goals for the first day of class, that might include bravely entering the pool, listening to the teacher and trying some of the fun activities and games with the children.
Having small first day goals will make a huge difference in the long run and creates a lot of opportunities for positive praise and reinforcement.
2. Day one of swimming lessons
The most important ingredient on the first day of swimming classes & lessons is for mum and dad to be calm and excited to be attending swimming lessons. Showing signs of anxiety or nervousness will transfer to your child. To help both mum and dad, and your little one ease into day one it is helpful to:
Not to rush or allowing other factors that can create sense of panic or stress.
Plan to arrive at the pool early, so you and your swimmer can potentially observe prior classes. If you are the first lesson of the day, ask if you can attend a different day to just sit and watch, so your child can see just how much fun swimming lessons are.
If you get to the pool and your swimmer is already scared and in tears, it is critical to remain calm, and highlight how much fun swimming is and reflect on some of the small goals you may have agreed on prior.
Trust the swimming coaches & instructors and pool deck staff as they know what to do, as we all have extensive experience helping children through this period. The more confident and supportive you are, the quicker your child will accept he or she is in good hands.
3. What if your child doesn’t settle
Most of the time our children settle down within minutes, however there are a few who will remain upset the entire lesson. Is very important not to worry as this isn’t unusual, tears are a normal reaction.
Staying in the water for an entire class is a BIG achievement for a first-time swimmer and must be celebrated and praised.
Tell your child how proud you are that they stuck it out. It is useful to share stories of your life where you did something you were not sure about, and how you enjoyed it.
When at home during bath time start practicing some skills from the swimming class such as blowing bubbles, using goggles and pouring water over your child’s head. You can even practice floating in the bath-tub.
Speak to our deck supervisors about activities & proper technique that are consistent with our program.
Finally, persistence is GOLD. By remaining positive & supportive of swimming lessons will help your child make the adjustment and ultimately development a sense of achievement and confidence.
In conclusion
Our goal is to ensure all children feel safe and supported in the water. The focus in the early stages of our learn to swim program is to build water safety skills in children, helping to make them drown-proof in the event that they ever accidentally fell into water. Parents play a critical role in helping accomplish this goal with every student.

Junior Kickers (2.5 years to 3.5 years) – Imagination
Mighty Kickers (3.5 years to 5th Birthday) – Match-play

Why a Basketball Club Matters
Joining a Basketball Club can be a pivotal moment in your child's athletic development. It's not just about refining their basketball skills; it's also a place where they can learn teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. Here's how you can make an informed decision:
1. Assess Your Child's Age and Skill Level
The first step is to consider your child's age and skill level. Most clubs in Australia have programs tailored for various age groups and skill levels. Make sure to choose a club that aligns with your child's basketball experience.
For young kids, clubs often offer introductory programs that focus on basic skills and fun. As your child grows, they can transition to more competitive and skill-focused teams. Ensure that the club's offerings match your child's age and skill level.
2. Location and Schedule
Location and schedule are practical considerations. You want a club that's easy to get to, and practice sessions that fit your family's schedule. This ensures that attending practices and games won't be a constant struggle. Additionally, local clubs can foster a sense of community, which can be incredibly rewarding for both you and your child.
3. Meet the Basketball Coaches & Instructors
Basketball Coaches and instructors play a crucial role in your child's development. They are not just mentors but also role models. Take the time to meet the coaching staff and assess their qualifications, experience, and coaching philosophy.
Ask questions about their approach to teaching and if they prioritize character development as well. Great coaches and instructors are not just concerned with winning games but also with the personal growth of each child.
4. Club Philosophy and Values
Every club has its own unique culture and values. Some emphasize competition, while others focus on fostering a love for the game and personal growth. It's important to align your child's goals and values with those of the club.
Make sure to research the club's philosophy and speak with other parents to get a sense of the culture. Clubs with a strong emphasis on character development and positive sportsmanship can offer a well-rounded experience for your child.
5. Facilities and Equipment
Take a tour of the club's facilities and assess the quality of equipment. Clean and well-maintained facilities provide a safe and enjoyable environment for your child to train and play. Quality equipment is essential for skill development.
Additionally, inquire about safety protocols and procedures to ensure your child's well-being during training and games.
6. Cost and Affordability
Budget is a key consideration when choosing a Basketball Club. Different clubs may have varying fees and expenses. Make sure to understand the cost structure, including registration fees, uniform costs, and any additional expenses. Find a club that fits your budget without compromising your child's experience.
7. Trial Period
Many clubs offer trial periods or introductory sessions. Take advantage of these opportunities to gauge if the club is the right fit for your child. This will give both you and your child a chance to experience the club's atmosphere and determine if it aligns with your expectations.
8. Parent Involvement
Consider how much involvement the club expects from parents. Some clubs may require parents to volunteer or participate in fundraising efforts. Ensure that the level of parent involvement aligns with your availability and commitment.
9. Long-Term Opportunities
Think about your child's long-term goals and the opportunities the club offers for growth. Does the club have pathways for progressing to more competitive teams? Will your child have the chance to participate in tournaments and competitions? Understanding the club's long-term prospects can help you make a well-informed decision.
10. Feedback from Parents
One of the best ways to gather insights about a Basketball Club is by talking to other parents. They can provide valuable information about their experiences, the club's strengths, and any challenges they've encountered. Their feedback can offer a unique perspective that can assist you in making the right choice. ActiveActivities is a great resource for Kids Basketball Activities.
Choosing the right Basketball Club for your child is an important decision that can significantly impact their development both on and off the court. By carefully considering these factors and seeking the right fit, you'll be setting your child up for a rewarding and enriching basketball experience. So, go ahead, take the plunge, and watch your child soar on the basketball court!

Are sports camps for your kid(s)?
Do your kids love playing sports? Do they have a particular sporting passion they would like to develop further or are they in need of a bit more exercise? They might love going to a sports camp. With so many options available, whatever your kid’s interest, there is bound to be a sports camp for them!
They can choose from:
Water sports camps (rowing, swimming, surfing etc)
Football camp
Tennis camp
Soccer camp
Cricket camp
Athletics camps and many more!
Whether your child loves team sports or more solitary sporting pursuits, they can get a lot out of a sports camp. They are equally suited to boys and girls and usually cater to kids who are primary school age and above. If your child doesn’t play a particular sport, more general sports camps and youth centres can be a good opportunity for them to learn and play a number of different sports and other kids activities to see what they enjoy most.
Get your kids to a sports camp at the next holidays!
Is your child keen to get involved? Check out our ActiveActivities Directory for a local sports camp for them. Costs vary depending on hours and the type of sport, but generally, you can expect to pay around $60 - $100 per day for a non-residential youth sports camp. They run during the school holidays and some may be seasonal depending on the sport (particularly water sports that may not run during the winter). Make sure clothing is appropriate for the weather and sport and it is always a good idea to check if equipment is included or if you have to supply anything special for your child.
If sports camps aren’t quite right for your child, why not try something else? More general holiday camps often include some sports amidst a broader, more varied curriculum. Your child might enjoy a recreation camp or one with a more educational emphasis. Whatever camp your child decides on, hopefully they can enjoy fun, friends and a chance to learn new skills!
