James studied part of a Bachelor of Music (Performance) in Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied piano performance with well known Australian musicians Kevin Hunt, Mike Nock, Craig Scott, Matt McMahon, Judy Bailey, Andrew Dickeson and others.
