They're not quite old enough yet for teenage-style parties but too old for things like soft play centres.

As your kids get older, it might feel a bit daunting to plan and throw a great party for them, but we’ve got you covered.

Here are some tips for planning the perfect children’s party:" ["content"]=> string(3123) "

Who should I invite?

The guest list can be difficult, as inviting too many children can blow your budget and make it harder to plan activities.

First, work out a budget for the party, and how much the cost-per-head will be, before drawing up a guest list. Having too many children around can also be a bit overwhelming for the birthday child, so consider keeping the guest list to close friends. A dozen or so guests is usually ideal for pre-teen parties.

Next, you’ll need to lock in a theme so you can put together the perfect invite.

Getting the theme right

Children tend to develop strong ideas about what they want as they get older, so chat with them about the party to get them interested and involved.

Some kids will want a themed party based on their favourite movie or TV show, or they might want to do something specific with their friends. Once you've got some inspiration direct from the source, you can begin thinking about the best ways to bring their party to life and craft a day they’ll never forget.

Bringing the party to life

Never assume that a group of children will entertain themselves. Not providing enough entertainment is a sure-fire recipe for disaster. Think about how long the party will last and how long each activity will take. It's always better to have too much planned for a party than not enough, so make sure the entertainment is at the heart of your party planning.

You could:

Keeping the energy levels high

So now you’ve got your guests, theme and venue worked out, you need to make sure everyone has the fuel they’ll need to keep the party going strong.

Nothing is more difficult to control than a room full of hungry children, so consider timing lunch or dinner early into the party. Make sure you ask parents to RSVP with details of any food allergies, and choose a wide variety of foods so that picky eaters will find something to enjoy.

Planning your child's party can be a bit of a minefield, so it's important to plan as far in advance as possible, to think about the needs of your child's guests, and to make sure things are well organised. Of course, the birthday child comes first so think about the things your child likes, and then start planning for a crowd.

["overview"]=> string(548) "Hey there, Aussie parents and caregivers! If you're like most of us, you want to give your kids the birthday party of their dreams without sending your bank account into a tailspin. Fortunately, throwing a fantastic celebration without emptying your pockets is entirely possible. In this article, we'll spill the beans on how to find budget-friendly birthday party venues, plan exciting party games, and create unforgettable memories for your little ones." ["content"]=> string(5257) "

1. Start with a Plan

Before you dive into the world of party planning, take a moment to brainstorm your child's interests and preferences. Knowing what makes your kid tick will help you choose a theme that'll keep them smiling throughout the party.

Maybe your child is obsessed with superheroes or unicorns, or perhaps they have a passion for animals. Once you've got a theme in mind, it's time to start planning. And remember, you don't need to hire a party planner – a DIY approach can be both fun and budget-friendly!

2. Opt for Outdoor Adventures

When it comes to kids' parties, outdoor venues can be a fantastic money-saving option. Australia is blessed with stunning natural landscapes, parks, and beaches that can serve as the perfect backdrop for your child's special day.

Consider a picnic in the local park, a beachside bash, or even a backyard barbecue. These options are not only cost-effective but also offer kids plenty of space to run around and play party games.

3. Check Out Community Centers

Many communities in Australia have affordable community centers that offer party venue rentals. These facilities often come equipped with tables, chairs, and even kitchen access, making it easy to host a memorable party without breaking the bank.

Plus, supporting your local community center is a win-win – you get a budget-friendly venue, and your contribution helps maintain these vital community spaces.

4. Think Outside the Box

Don't be afraid to get creative with your venue choices. Your kid's birthday party doesn't have to be at a traditional venue. Consider options like the local library, a museum, or even a school gymnasium. Many of these places offer budget-friendly rental rates and can add an educational element to the celebration.

5. DIY Decorations and Entertainment

Get your creative juices flowing and make your own decorations. Crafting with your child can be a fantastic pre-party activity that adds a personal touch to the celebration. Simple decorations like paper streamers, balloons, and homemade banners can transform any space into a festive one.

For party entertainment, you don't need to hire  clowns or magicians. Plan some fun party games and activities yourself. Classic games like musical chairs, sack races, or a piñata can keep kids entertained for hours. If you're feeling tech-savvy, create a playlist of your child's favorite songs for a DIY dance party.

6. Embrace the Potluck Party

Feeding a hungry group of kids can be one of the most significant expenses of a birthday party. Instead of shouldering the entire cost, consider throwing a potluck party. Ask parents to bring their child's favorite dish or snack, and you can handle the cake and drinks. Not only does this save you money, but it also adds a communal, family-oriented vibe to the event.

7. Keep the Guest List in Check

It's tempting to invite the whole neighborhood, but a smaller guest list can save you money without sacrificing the fun factor. Discuss the guest list with your child and limit the number of invitees to close friends and family. This way, you can focus on creating a more intimate and memorable experience for everyone.

8. Go Digital with Invitations

Say goodbye to traditional paper invitations and postage costs. Go digital with e-invitations. There are plenty of online tools and websites that allow you to create stunning digital invites, which you can send via email or social media. It's not only eco-friendly but also budget-friendly!

9. Hunt for Deals and Discounts

Don't forget to scout for deals and discounts. Check out websites like ActiveActivities, which often feature budget-friendly party venues and suppliers. You might stumble upon special offers or discounts that can make your party planning even more economical.

10. DIY Party Favors

Instead of buying expensive pre-made party favors, consider creating your own. Craft simple goody bags filled with stickers, small toys, and candies. It's a fun project to involve your child in and can save you a significant amount compared to store-bought favors.

In conclusion, throwing a budget-friendly kids' birthday party in Australia doesn't mean you have to compromise on fun or memorable experiences. With a little creativity and planning, you can find affordable party venues, create exciting party games, and make your child's celebration one they'll cherish forever. So, get ready to celebrate without breaking the bank and watch your child's face light up with joy on their special day!

The same predicament flies through your head: “Should I have it at home and risk children flying everywhere and making a huge mess? Or should I host it out of the house, which will probably cost me more?”

Read these top tips on how to plan the next birthday event and be happy with the result:

1) Remember your budget, and stick to it
It’s important not to lose sight of your budget. Don’t let the party get bigger than your wallet. Usually you think that by having the party at home you are saving costs, but by the end of the day, you realise you have over spent, your exhausted, and you have a huge mess to contend with. You’ll be surprised at how cost effective and easy throwing a party off-site can be. Start off by working out how much you actually want to spend on the party before you do anything else. Keep those expectations close to you from start to finish and if you feel you are going over in one area, reign in financially on another." ["content"]=> string(2432) "

2) Organise the party outside

Every child and parent loves being outside in fresh air. Firstly, it’s healthy and usually includes some form of exercise for the kids.  It’s also a hassle-free alternative to hosting it inside your home, when more often time than not, the clean-up process could be a lot longer than the party itself! 15 kids under 5 running through your home can get messy, so wear the kids out by playing party games outside. Some party venues may offer both inside and outside options. Use of play equipment (excluding art and craft supplies). So no matter what the weather you are sorted. Plus there could also be a kitchen for preparing and heating party food. It's worth checking!

3) What does your child want?

Kids have big imaginations, so be specific when asking your child what they want out of their party.  Ask them what theme they’d like everything to be or what they’d like to do with their friends. Answering questions like these will give you an idea of what’s really important to them and stimulate ideas for venue, party invitations and food options..

4) Make a bullet point list!

Writing a list will help you sort out logistics, what you need, how many etc. Party favours, decorations, games, guest list, invitations, music, food, drinks, birthday cakes and presents – all these things that make your party come to life are important, but easily forgotten.

5) Have fun

Probably the most important point! The birthday party isn’t a day for you to be pulling your hair out. Now that all the nitty-gritty of the planning process is complete, sit back and watch your party masterpiece play out, with cake in hand, and enjoy celebrating another successful year of your childs life.  All you need to do is take the rubbish bag home with you.

Kids parties only go for a couple of hours
I have been asked many times how a party works time wise, generally it will last 2 hours, say from 10 am to 12 noon or 2 pm to 4 pm on a Saturday or a Sunday. Sometimes even Friday afternoon after school!" ["content"]=> string(5091) "

Magic Entertainers generally arrive at the time the invitation states, and may take up to 30 minutes to set up and meet and greet the children as they arrive. It's important to know how long the entertainment will run for and share the order of events for the day with them to see if they can help things run a bit more smoothly for you and your child. For example, as a magician, my show runs for 45 minutes and then I can twist balloons for the kids while they wait to cut the cake - or help with games and piñatas.

It takes the same amount of time to pack up as it does to prepare for the show, so allow another 30 minutes for this. One entertainer is more than enough for the kids, so you can save money on jumping castles and face painters.

MOST IMPORTANT: The best entertainment books out months in advance! Avoid disappointment by booking the entertainment for your party as far in advance as possible.

Morning versus an afternoon party

There are pros and cons for both options and parents generally choose what suits them best. Here are a few things to consider:

Some parents worry about children having conflicting activities on a Saturday morning (such as school sport) and therefore will hold the party in the afternoon. If the birthday child is involved in Saturday morning activities, their close friends may be there too, so perhaps an afternoon party may be more suitable. Similarly, some families go to church on Sunday, and some parents like to use this time to prepare for an afternoon party.

Alternatively, if your child and their friends are not so sporty - or it's not the season to play their preferred sport, a morning party may be perfect. As a magic entertainer, I do just as many morning shows as afternoon shows, it just depends on the family's preferences. The best thing about having a morning party is that some parents then like to organise a family-gathering in the afternoon.

Afternoon shows allow families to spend time together in the morning, drop their child to the party and go and do some shopping or pursuit for a few hours before they return.

Plan your party around what suits you as a mum, not every child you invite will be able to attend. Check their best friends can make it and organise the rest around you. You cannot please everybody every time!

Party location: at home (inside or outside), at a venue or at a park?

If you decide to have your party at a park, it will limit the entertainment you may be able to reach. Many magicians have had a bad experience performing in parks – for example: a rabbit ran away, it rained, wind blew props away, balloons pop on the grass, children are easily distracted, and the list goes on.

On the other hand, parks are popular to host kids parties because your house doesn't get dirty, children can let their hair down and it's cheap!

As a magician – these would be the best venues to host your party in order of preference:

  1. A community centre/scout hall etc.
  2. A home
  3. A covered back patio, or clean garage
  4. A backyard under cover
  5. A backyard (no cover)
  6. A park.

There are a few positives for home/venue parties, for example: anything indoors is a controlled environment for an entertainer to perform their best! It's weather proof, fool proof, rabbit proof, prop proof and best of all - the children will be able to concentrate on the show, which is why we are booked in the first place.

Not eating or drinking during entertainment

It’s recommended that you resist feeding the children while they are being entertained. Drinks spill, children cannot clap with food in their hands, and it causes interruptions to the performer’s routine and the show loses momentum, resulting in a weak performance.

Save food and drinks for before and after the show.

No talking during the show

Parents are encouraged to watch the show as much as the children – it creates the perfect setting to perform in. If parents are talking behind children during a performance it can distract the performer and the audience. If it is necessary to talk during a performance, please do it quietly in another room where you can’t be heard.

Then their birthday comes around and they ask the dreaded: “Can we have it here?”

Have no fear, it can be done and it doesn’t have to be all bad!

In fact, it can be fun. Here are some tips on how to host your first kid’s birthday party." ["content"]=> string(4393) "

Remember what your child wants

Ok, we’re not saying you have to adhere to the demands of real unicorns, real monsters, or real treasure, when you’re 5 you have some pretty unrealistic expectations. But, you should remember what’s important to them. What they want for their birthday party. Two great questions to get you started are:

- What do you want to do at your party?

- What colour do you want everything to be?

- What cake do you want? (this is always a great inspiration for the theme)

- Do you want your friends to dress up?

Balloons and bubbles. Always.
No matter who they are, or where they’re from, kids have an innate fascination with bubble and balloons. Popping them, playing catch with them, running through them like mad little people. Always have both at your party. When you need a break, break out the bubbles and let them go mad.

Follow the formula for the perfect party
Yes, apparently, there is one? We only just found out about this recently but the perfect formula is age = number of children invited. So if your child is 5 then invite 5 children, 11 invite 11. We’re not entirely sold on this one. Whoever thought this one up clearly hasn’t had an over-excited 5-year-old taking you through their invite list 11 months and 29 days before the party!!

Don’t be too proud to outsource and delegate where you can
Now, your budget will dictate how much you can outsource but if you can, don’t be afraid to. When you have 15 screaming children to cater for, decorate the house, plan the day, organize the games, lolly bags, that’s a lot and can become quite overwhelming. There may be somethings you just can’t let go of. Perhaps it’s really important to you that you make the cake or decorating’s your thing. Whatever it is, pick the top things you, under no circumstances, are prepared to let go off and the delegate or outsource what’s left. If it’s a big party, with lots of family and friends, consider asking those closest to you to bring a plate.

Let go of perfection
Mums are notoriously hard on themselves. They want everything to be perfect. Be the perfect mum, host the perfect party. But you don’t need to be perfect. You and your child just need to have fun. They won’t notice the details, all they’ll remember is the fun that they had at their birthday party. Something always goes wrong at events. Whether it’s someone not turning up, something breaking, or a dish that you’ve forgotten to prepare. Just breathe, laugh it off, and if that doesn’t work, drink wine.

Write. It. Down.
Lists, lists and more lists. With so many details going around in your head, it’s inevitable that something will get forgotten. Every idea, plan, boring thing you need to do, that comes into your head. That will not only make it easier to manage, it’ll make it easier to delegate too.

Have a plan B
Always have a back-up plan. Something to fill time when something isn’t going to plan. Say the entertainer is stuck in traffic and won’t be there for another hour. You’ll need to have something on hand to fill the time. That could be a party game such as pass the parcel, or a pin the tail on the donkey. Whatever it is, the children won’t realise anything’s wrong because they’ll be having way too much fun.

Don’t forget to have fun
Sometimes we can get so consumed with what’s happening next, or what should be happening, we forget to have fun. This is a party and parties are a meant to be fun for everyone. Take time to watch your child and take in their excitement as they have a great time with their friends.

["overview"]=> string(791) "Research has been conducted by UEFA Direct to study and compare passing performance in football and futsal (the FIFA-approved, indoor, 5-a-side, format of football) and to investigate the transfer of passing skills from futsal to football.
Throughout the study, 48 elite male youth players (24 football and 24 futsal), aged between 13 and 15 years, played six-a-side football and futsal games, lasting five minutes each, on scaled-down pitches.
Decision-making and technical skills associated with passing performance were evaluated. Furthermore, the players wore special goggles that assessed where they were looking when passing the ball, to examine the processes underpinning their decisions. Game and performance-related variables were analysed and compared between the groups." ["content"]=> string(2292) "

The research report recently released by UEFA (UEFA Direct , March 2017, Page 11) has found that Futsal players were able to execute passes quicker and more accurately than outdoor Football players as a result of Futsal having higher technical demands in smaller spaces than that of Football. It found that Futsal players were able to focus more of their attention on decision making whilst Football players were spending more of their time controlling the ball.

The study concluded that Futsal players:

- Have more technical game demands than football and play at a higher intensity, with 23% more passes per minute, less time for execution and greater pressure from opponents.

- Execute passes half a second quicker than footballers, that are 18% more accurate.

- Focus more attention on decision making then controlling the ball.

- Have higher demands on passing performance than football and subsequently players develop quicker technical and decision-making ability to cope.

The report concluded that playing Futsal from a young age allows kids to develop quicker technical and decision-making skills and that it is effective training for those looking to play the outdoor format in the future. You can easily transition Futsal from a basketball-sized court to an outdoor field given that there is far more space and time for players control the ball, make decisions and execute passes or shots.

Futsal is a highly popular fast-paced sport played all around the world, and one of the fastest growing sports in Australia. It is exciting to play and watch and is known for producing many of the world's most talented played over the years including the likes of superstars such as Messi, Ronaldinho and Neymar.

Will Your Kids Enjoy Playing the Trombone?

Does your child love music?
If they want to learn to play an instrument that is challenging and fun they might enjoy playing the trombone. The trombone is a popular instrument and a fixture in the symphony orchestra. There will be plenty of trombone based activities for kids and opportunities for your child to perform and show off their trombonist skills in their school band or orchestra. That’s what makes it really rich in terms of variety: slow and very classical or rhythmic and jazzy, your child will definitely find the way to play it the way they like!

Other benefits might include:

Is your child too young to play the trombone?
Usually kids start playing around 5 or 6 but they can start younger. If your child isn’t ready, you can always teach them the recorder or another wind instrument to let them get the idea before they progress to the trombone.

How Can You Organise Trombone Lessons and Events for Your Kids?

Finding a trombone teacher doesn’t have to be a hassle! Check in our ActiveActivities Directory for your closest music teacher or trombone class. Trombone lessons usually start at around $60 per hour for private tuition and less for group classes. You can find other musical kids activities in the Performing Arts section of our directory.

Your child will need a trombone of their own to practise with and you can either purchase or rent an instrument. Renting is probably the most cost effective option in the beginning and it gives your child a chance to get a feel for the instrument before you make a financial commitment.  Trombones come in different shapes and sizes. There are two main types of trombone, tenor and bass and it is usually better for kids to start with a tenor instrument.

Other similar instruments that your child might enjoy playing include the trumpet, the horn and the tuba. With a bit of practise you could have your own brass band at home!

Why going to national parks in the Brisbane region is a great activity for your kids?

Australia has most of the endangered species in the world. These animals are protected and kept in their natural habitats at zoos and national parks, where your kids can actually interact with them. National parks in QLD, especially in Brisbane, are also very popular tourist spots and recreation areas in Australia. With the national parks’ untouched environment, you can get to escape from the busy city without actually leaving the city. Brisbane has a subtropical climate, ideal for outdoor activities. Enjoy this nice Brisbane climate by spending time with your kids at these popular national parks in the Brisbane region. They offer educational and adventure activities like visiting the animals, camping, and bushwalking. They also provide recreational facilities like picnic and barbeque areas, playgrounds, and other family and kids activities.

There are more things to do with kids in Brisbane other than visiting the national parks; so your kids have more options on how they want to spend their holidays in the city. Our ActiveActivities Directory recommends some of the most popular kids activities in Brisbane.

Kids love animals as much as they love picnics and adventure activities. With a trip to the national parks, the kids and the whole family can get to enjoy these three activities, letting them have the best day ever!

Read on for our top tips on how to plan the next birthday event and be happy with the result:

1) Remember your budget, and stick to it

It’s important not to lose sight of your budget. Don’t let the party get bigger than your wallet.  Usually you think that by having the party at home you are saving costs, but by the end of the day, you realise you have over spent, your exhausted, and you have a huge mess to contend with.  You’ll be surprised at how cost effective and easy throwing a party off-site can be.  Start off by working out how much you actually want to spend on the party before you do anything else. Keep those expectations close to you from start to finish and if you feel you are going over in one area, reign in financially on another.

A couple of ideas could be a round of Mini Golf  or how about hiring a jumping castle? These are both outside and stress free activities… whilst you and the parents sit back and enjoy that second (or third!) piece of cake.

3) What does your child want?

Kids have big imaginations, so be specific when asking your child what they want out of their party.  Ask them what theme they’d like everything to be or what they’d like to do with their friends. Answering questions like these will give you an idea of what’s really important to them and stimulate ideas for venue, invitation and food options. Jumping castle’s, dodgem cars, or a trampoline centre could be ideas to put forth.

4) Make a bullet point list!

Writing a list will help you sort out logistics, what you need, how many etc. Party favours, decorations, games, guest list, invitations, music, food, drinks, cake and presents – all these things that make your party come to life are important, but easily forgotten.

5) Have fun

Probably the most important point! The birthday party isn’t a day for you to be pulling your hair out. Now that all the nitty-gritty of the planning process is complete, sit back and watch your party masterpiece play out, with cake in hand, and enjoy celebrating another successful year of your childs life done well!

Is volleyball for your kids?

Toddlers can start playing volleyball while they are learning balancing and coordination. Teach them basic volleyball skills such as passing and tossing with softer and safer alternatives to volleyballs such as balloons and smaller balls that are easy to toss around. They can also learn a lot about volleyball by watching volleyball games. But they can understand this ball sport and the rules more by actually learning to play it. The six basic skills mastered in competitive volleyball are serve, pass, set, attack, block, and dig.

Volleyball requires high levels of endurance, flexibility, speed, and agility. You can encourage your children to learn volleyball by sending them to volleyball camps for kids that offer programs including volleyball for beginners. Sports camps and clubs are the ideal way to make sports lessons and training more fun. Volleyball camps and clubs that specialise in teaching kids conduct volleyball drills that help them develop the required skills; and they also make it more enjoyable by incorporating kids games and other fun kids activities to keep them engaged.

There are different types of volleyball that enables your kids to enjoy the sport wherever they are. They are: beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, and outdoor volleyball. Volleyball rules are the same for all these types; just a little bit modified to adapt to the location, the number of players, and also to whether they are playing it as a competitive sport or just for leisure.

Volleyball is also a great way for the family to spend time together. Bring a ball on your next family day out or enjoy it as a family pastime in your backyard. Kids can also join volleyball leagues in schools and communities to help reinforce their skills especially if they want to turn their hobby into a serious endeavour.

Click on our ActiveActivities Directory to find the nearest sports centres and clubs, as well as the schedule of sports camps that offer volleyball lessons and training for kids. We also provide tips and ideas for great activities for your kids including babies, toddlers, and teens.

Encourage your kids to engage in activities that help develop a healthy lifestyle in them, as well as to encourage physical activity. Volleyball is an ideal sport that they can learn because they can play it indoors, outdoors, on the grass or even on sand. Invite them to play a fun and non-competitive game of volleyball on the weekend. Ask their friends to come over, too!

In the beginner's classes of snowboarding lessons, kids learn how to snow ski. Ski lessons teach basic skills that are also essential in snowboarding like balancing. They need to learn to balance with ski poles before they start balancing sideways on a snowboard. There are ski clubs for kids for the younger ones who need to learn the basics.

Aside from teaching beginners how to snowboard, snowboarding clubs also aims to produce great snowboarding athletes out of everyone who wishes to develop snowboarding fundamentals and prepare for snowboard competitions.

It is best to enrol your children in snowboarding clubs with winter programs with trained professionals as instructors. You can check our ActiveActivities Directory for a list of available snowboarding clubs around Australia, as well as other fun snow activities or snow sports for kids of all ages, from babies to teens.

The key to a happy and safe family holiday at the slopes is for kids to attend lessons. In snowboarding clubs, kids will get to have a healthy lifestyle and learn new skills, while being with friends in a child-friendly environment!
