Give your child a head start on their education by enrolling them in preschool!
Preschools are educational facilities for 3-5 year olds. Designed to help prepare kids for school, they are also a chance for big toddlers to play and socialise and for parents to get a well-deserved break!
[content] =>
Are preschools an option for you and your kids?
Is your toddler in need of more stimulation? Is your 4-year old ready for school or do you feel they could benefit from a bit more preparation? Preschool might be the answer. Many Australian parents choose to send their child to preschool to help enhance their development, give them a chance to meet others and get involved in education and a range of activities for kids their age. It also prepares them for school.
The benefits of preschools are many and include:
Prepares kids for school - Preschool programmes focus on teaching children appropriate classroom behaviour and pre-academic skills
Stimulates kids - Provides children with the opportunity to get involved in a range of kids activities, including crafts, music, physical activities, learning games, cooking and much more
Helps kids to socialise - Spending time around children their own age helps kids to learn social behaviour such as sharing, turn taking and co-operation
Gives parents a break - Preschools can give parents the opportunity to work, spend time with their other children or just take some time for themselves
Preschools differ from day-care or nursery in that they generally run during school hours and term times and are usually staffed by specialised early childhood teachers. Most childcare centres catering to children aged 3-5 are legally required to have an educational preschool programme in place so no matter where your child goes, they will have access to many of the benefits of preschool.
Interested in enrolling your child in preschool? Get in early, as some have waiting lists of up to 2 years. It is a good idea to put your child’s name down at birth to be sure of a place.
Get your kids to a preschool!
Where are they? You can look in our ActiveActivities Directory to find the closest preschool in your area. All preschools are not created equal so make sure you visit a few to find the most suitable one for your child. Costs vary from around $30 a day to $100 plus and there are government rebates and concessions available to help working families with the costs.
Check whether lunch and/or morning and afternoon tea are provided. In addition to food, you will need to provide your child with a change of clothes and possibly a set of sheets depending on whether they are still having a daytime nap. The right preschool can open your child to a whole new world of fun, friends and learning!

[title] => DIY Cube Bubbles
[short_description] => Have you ever wondered how to make cube-shaped bubbles?
[long_descritpion] => Bubbles are usually round, right? But they don't have to be! Spending quality time with my kids is the most important task of my week. But with all the other things I need to do, playing Barbie dolls or hide and go seeks seems a rip off of my time and let's just say it, it gets boring fast. Because my passion is all things sciencey, I naturally want to share my love of the exploration of life with them.

Over the years I've come to realises that engaging with my children mean sharing my interests and inviting them into my world as well as going into theirs. So with much enthusiasm and excitement lets explore bubbles and what we can do with them.
[content] =>
Cube bubbles are one of those cool, quick projects that offer a good mixture of fun creation and scientific concepts. All you need is:
A bunch of pipe cleaners
Scissors
Warm water
Dishwashing liquid
Once you're ready here is the video of how to make your own Cube Bubbles and below that are the steps;
Create a square with one pipe cleaners by twisting one end together and pinching the corners to form the square.
Create two more squares with two more pipe cleaners. Cut one side free from each square. Twist the open ends around the completed square from step one.
With the two pieces of cut pipe cleaner join the two ends to complete the cube wall.
Add one more pipe cleaner as a handle by twisting it around two cube walls. This will help with bubble formation.
Add warm water to a container and slowly add dishwashing liquid. Stir gently and avoid making bubbles.
Dip the cube in using the handle. If you don't get a cube bubble first try to add a little more dishwashing liquid or tilt the cube when putting it in the water.
Blow into the bubble with a straw and see what happens.
So what the scientific concepts behind bubbles that suitable for kinder aged kids?
Bubbles are air inside a soapy liquid film. The outside layers of this film are soap and between these soap layers is a layer of water.
Bubbles and are round because once the air is sealed inside it, it shrinks to the smallest surface area possible for the volume of air inside. That's a sphere.
Cube bubbles work because the soap liquid sticks to all six sides of the cube and creates a larger surface area than needed. This allows the cube-shaped bubble to form!
A bubble pops because some of the water inside the layers evaporates and becomes unstable.
Heres a tip for Kids Science at home - When I take on a new project my technique is to start creating it without asking my little ones to join in. That probably sounds weird but It works a treat. As they see me doing something new in front of them their curiosity is engaged and a conversation about what I'm doing starts. I also help me not to get that feeling that I'm 'telling' them what to do. Rather I allow them to copy me or design their own experiment with the materials I have about awhile talking about what I'm doing.
One last tip. Be open to it taking a different direction with your kids. Allow them in the driver's seat. You can still create your own creation to play with and talk about but allowing them to explore will help build real connections to knowledge and enjoy the experience more.

[title] => Introduction to Sports for Young Children: Choosing the Right Activity
[short_description] => Guide on choosing the best starter sport for young kids.
[long_descritpion] => Explore how to select the right sport for young children, focusing on their interests, safety, and parental involvement, to ensure a fun and enriching sports experience.
[overview] => A guide for Australian parents and carers looking to introduce young children to sports. It highlights the importance of observing a child's interests and abilities to choose age-appropriate activities, such as swimming and soccer. The article underscores the benefits of early sports involvement for physical, social, and cognitive development. It also provides practical tips on selecting the right sport, focusing on safety, convenience, and cost. Emphasis is placed on the role of parents in encouraging and supporting their child's sports journey, advocating for a balance of fun, learning, and growth in sports.
[content] =>
Hello Aussie parents and carers! Are you contemplating introducing your little one to the world of sports? It's an exciting step, but with so many options, it can be a bit overwhelming. From Swimming Classes to Soccer Classes, and Pre School Sports programs, the choices are endless. Let's explore how to select the right sport for your child, ensuring it’s enjoyable, beneficial, and a great fit for their budding abilities.
Understanding Your Child's Interests and Abilities
Before diving into the plethora of sports available, take a moment to observe your child. What activities do they naturally gravitate towards? Are they more interested in individual challenges or team-based games? Understanding their interests and physical abilities is key in choosing a sport they will enjoy and excel in.
Age-Appropriate Sports
For younger kids, especially in pre-school, focus on sports that enhance basic motor skills and coordination. Activities like tumbling, simple gymnastics, or ball games are great starters. As children grow, their capacity for understanding complex rules and strategies also increases, opening doors to more structured sports.
The Benefits of Starting Early
Introducing sports at a young age comes with a myriad of benefits. It helps in developing motor skills, social skills, and even cognitive abilities. Early exposure to physical activity sets a foundation for a healthy lifestyle and can instill a lifelong love for sports.
Physical and Mental Development
Participating in sports enhances a child's physical development, improving strength, coordination, and overall fitness. It also boosts mental health, contributing to higher self-esteem and resilience.
Popular Sports for Young Children
Swimming is not just a fun activity; it's a vital life skill. Swimming classes offer a safe environment where children can learn water safety and improve their physical strength. It's a skill that not only provides a great workout but can also save lives.
Soccer is a fantastic team sport that's suitable for all ages. It promotes teamwork, coordination, and cardiovascular health. Soccer classes for young children are usually focused more on fun and basic skills rather than competition, making it a great starter sport.
Pre-school sports programs are specifically designed for young children, focusing on basic skills, fun, and social interaction. These programs often introduce kids to a variety of sports, helping them discover what they enjoy the most.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Sport
Selecting the right sport for your child involves considering several factors:
Safety
Always consider the safety of the sport. Ensure the program or class has qualified instructors, appropriate safety gear, and a proven track record of providing a safe environment.
Convenience
Consider the location and schedule of the classes. A conveniently located and scheduled sport reduces stress for both you and your child, making the experience more enjoyable.
Cost
Be mindful of the costs associated with different sports, including equipment, uniforms, and ongoing class fees.
Encouraging Your Child
Once you’ve chosen a sport, encourage your child’s participation but avoid pressuring them. Celebrate their efforts and progress rather than just their victories. Remember, the goal is to foster a love for sports and physical activity, not just to win games.
The Role of Parents
As a parent or carer, your role is to be a supportive and positive influence. Attend their games, help them practice, and most importantly, show interest in what they’re learning and achieving.
Conclusion
Introducing your child to sports is a journey filled with fun, learning, and growth. Whether it’s swimming, soccer, or a pre-school sports program, the right sport can spark a lifelong passion for physical activity. Remember, the best sport for your child is one that they look forward to, where they can have fun, make friends, and learn new skills. So go ahead, explore the options, and get ready to cheer on your little athlete!

What's great about a community centre?
Community centres for kids provide generous amounts of space for fun and learning. This is similar to many professional service providers for kids such as day care, amusement centres and games halls; however a significant difference with community centres is that they are often run without the goal of making any financial profit.
Community centres are often run by volunteers and local community groups. Often the aim is to encourage families to spend time together, which benefits everyone from toddlers right through to older children and adults. A community centre may double as a multi-function community hall, providing party venues, hall hire and good quality function rooms at a low cost to other non-profit organisations.
Very importantly, in regional and remote areas of Australia, a community centre may actually be the only venue which offers kids activities at a low cost - or at all. Not every town has a sufficient population to support multiple services, so it becomes even more vital for the local community to unite and take part in events which support the wellbeing of families and growing children.
Why should my kids get involved in community centres?
When there are fun and educational activities for kids on offer, there's no reason not to take advantage of it. But an added element to events being held at community centres is the fact that they will often be put on by community organisations which are raising money for a noble cause, such as terminal illness, local school equipment or victims of natural disasters.
Getting your kids involved in good-willed causes like these at school fetes or local community festivals are a great way to encourage selfless service, and nurture their values of generosity and compassion. They are often also a great way to spend quality family time together!
What should I do to get my kids into community centres?
Find out together what community programmes or community services are running in your local area, such as the Rotary group (this is one which is Australia wide). These organisations meet at community centres, so you can get involved with them, as well as checking out notice boards at the centre for other events and groups when you visit.
And of course, you can check the ActiveActivities directory right now for a full listing of community centres for kids all over Australia!

Will Your Kids Enjoy Kids' Youth Centre Activities?
Are you worried on the lack of activities for kids in your area? It might be worth checking out your local youth centre. Youth centres offer a wide variety of kids' activities for older kids and teenagers including educational and recreational programs, group discussions, sports coaching and life skills courses. Many of them provide a place where kids can drop in and hang out with friends in a safe environment. Some of the benefits of youth centres include:
Social - kids have the opportunity to spend time with others their own age and also responsible adults.
Study support - lots of youth centres offer support programs for kids who are struggling academically or are stressed out with exam pressure.
A chance to explore new interests through leisure and recreational programs.
Opportunity to increase fitness by becoming involved in a sporting activity or joining a team.
Increased confidence from having a support network and also through educational programs designed to strengthen kids' health and wellbeing and maximize their potential.
Safety - youth centres can provide a drug and alcohol free environment for children who might otherwise be exposed to unfortunate influences.
Information sharing - youth centres offer older kids the opportunity to meet a range of people and share experiences and gain knowledge from the experience of others.
If your kids are aged 10 - 21 and interested in becoming part of an active community of kids and young adults, a youth centre might make a positive contribution to their development and education.
How Do You Organise Youth Centre Activities for Your Kids?
Not sure where to start? There will probably be a youth centre in your area so the best thing to do is give them a call and see what facilities and activities they have that might suit your child. Youth workers are always around to help your child if they want to just drop in and most activities are free of charge.
It is a good idea to check the opening hours before you go as some youth centres are only open during the afternoons or early evenings and many are closed on weekends.
A youth centre may offer a supportive and friendly environment kids need to develop their confidence, make friends, try new hobbies or sports, and explore their own ambitions and abilities. Why not locate youth centres in your area and pay a visit to find out more?

Babies use their music processing network to recognise and prefer their mother's voice, and to learn language, babbling away using the sounds of their native language from nine months. Music classes at this time have been shown to boost their language development, so this offer is our commitment to our youngest students as it's our wish that everyone has access to music education at this time.
My daughter Katya Eva, who is 19 1/2 months, has just completed her first term at the Music Playground Williamstown and it has exceeded my expectations.
The programme is exquisite. The hour goes so quickly and flows so nicely due to it being so well organised, interesting and fun. It is a fascinating twist on so many things that my daughter is exposed to and attends, it is a superior music programme, less chaotic and more focused than other music programmes we have attended in the past.
The standard of the instruments is very high, it is a clean, comfortable environment and we both really enjoy and look forward to going and participating.
Katrina and Sherry are so wonderful with my little girl, very respectful, caring and professional.
We will be continuing with the programme right through until Katya is 3 when we look forward to introducing her to the piano and violin. The next 18 months will continue to be a great introduction to her appreciating and respecting music and so many other skills that are learnt and cultivated during the Suzuki Music classes.
I highly recommend the wonderful space and environment which the Music Playground Williamstown provides.

We love the classes! My daughter and I have been attending and I can truly see how she has improved in music and how much she enjoys the classes. The classes are taught so children learn music the fun way. The classes also give children exposure to various musical instruments, which is great. And the group format also enables my daughter to learn from other children and she gets more motivated to learn too. The classes involve parents too, and I like that because children learn from parents and parents know what their children are learning so they can help their children learn at home. Last but not least, a wonderful program can only be successful when there is a wonderful teacher.

My daughters have been taking weekly music lessons with Katrina since 2004. She has a real passion for music which is evident in her own studies and training. Katrina has a strong commitment to her students and patiently guides and encourages them. I believe that if it wasn't for Katrina my daughters would have dropped music a long time ago. The girls now continuously incorporate music into their homework time as opposed to computer games. The girls growing love of music is a tribute to Katrina.
