The Boys' Brigade vs. Scouts vs. Cadets: What’s the Difference?

As a parent, you want the best for your kids, and when it comes to extracurricular activities, you have a ton of options. Three popular choices are The Boys' Brigade, Scouts, and Cadets. But how do these organizations stack up against each other? Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty and help you decide which one might be the best fit for your child!

What is The Boys' Brigade?

The Boys' Brigade (BB) has been around since 1883, and it's all about nurturing kids aged 5 to 18 in a wholesome environment. The program emphasizes spiritual development, discipline, and teamwork through a mix of fun activities like camping, sports, and crafts. Plus, there’s a focus on community service, which teaches kids about helping others and becoming responsible citizens.

What About Scouts?

On the other hand, Scouts is a globally recognized organization that encourages kids aged 6 to 25 to learn practical skills through outdoor adventures, teamwork, and leadership. The Scouts program is all about fostering independence and resilience in children. Think camping trips, hiking, and learning survival skills—all while making friends and having a great time!

And What are Cadets?

Now, let’s talk about Cadets. This organization is often associated with military-style training and is aimed mostly at kids aged 12 to 18. Cadets focus on discipline, leadership, and teamwork, but with a more structured approach. Think about learning drill commands, conducting parades, and engaging in adventurous activities like navigation and survival skills. It’s a great fit for kids interested in the military or wanting to build strong leadership skills.

Key Differences

So, what’s the main difference between these organizations? Here’s a quick breakdown:

Which One is Right for Your Child?

Choosing between The Boys' Brigade, Scouts, or Cadets ultimately depends on what you envision for your child. If they thrive in a structured setting with a focus on moral values, The Boys' Brigade might be the way to go. If they love outdoor adventures and learning practical skills, then Scouts could be the perfect fit. And if your child is interested in leadership and military-style training, Cadets would be an excellent choice.

Final Thoughts

All these organizations provide fantastic opportunities for kids to learn, grow, and make lasting memories. Regardless of which path you choose, you can rest assured that your child will be gaining valuable skills and experiences. So, take some time to explore each option, perhaps attend a few introductory sessions, and see where your child feels most at home!

Are wildlife parks for your kid(s)?

Do your kids love animals? If they enjoy being outdoors and love learning about nature and conservation, they might love a trip to a wildlife park. Australian wildlife parks, or wildlife centres are often run as part of wider rehabilitation or conservation programmes and allow visitors to observe and learn about a variety of different native and imported species of wildlife.

They are great places to visit for many reasons:

With so much to see and do at a wildlife park, your kids should enjoy the experience no matter what their age or interests! Wildlife parks are different from zoos in that the animals are usually roaming free under the protection of local authorities.

Are you thinking of heading to your closest wildlife park?
Don’t forget to check the weather! Wildlife parks are usually outdoors, so dress accordingly and take plenty of sunscreen and a hat. You might want to take a picnic but check what the rules are about bringing food into the park and make sure you don’t feed the animals and don’t leave any rubbish before leaving, as the animals may eat it and become ill! “Remember take nothing but memories, and leave nothing but footprints.”

Get your kids to a wildlife park during the next break!

Are you looking for an affordable day out for your kids?
Wildlife parks generally cost between $10-$25 for admission and kids activities such as camping and tours may be extra. Many wildlife parks are located just outside city centres for easy access by public transport and road. Most are open all year round and are staffed by a combination of rangers and volunteers. Check out our ActiveActivities Directory for wildlife parks wherever you plan to go!

No wildlife park in your area? Other nature based activities your kids might enjoy include hiking, camping and angling in a national park or even in non-protected areas. You may still discover a wild animal or two along the way!

What's great about a community centre?

Community centres for kids provide generous amounts of space for fun and learning. This is similar to many professional service providers for kids such as day care, amusement centres and games halls; however a significant difference with community centres is that they are often run without the goal of making any financial profit.

Community centres are often run by volunteers and local community groups. Often the aim is to  encourage families to spend time together, which benefits everyone from toddlers right through to older children and adults. A community centre may double as a multi-function community hall, providing party venues, hall hire and good quality function rooms at a low cost to other non-profit organisations.

Very importantly, in regional and remote areas of Australia, a community centre may actually be the only venue which offers kids activities at a low cost - or at all. Not every town has a sufficient population to support multiple services, so it becomes even more vital for the local community to unite and take part in events which support the wellbeing of families and growing children.

Why should my kids get involved in community centres?

When there are fun and educational activities for kids on offer, there's no reason not to take advantage of it. But an added element to events being held at community centres is the fact that they will often be put on by community organisations which are raising money for a noble cause, such as terminal illness, local school equipment or victims of natural disasters.

Getting your kids involved in good-willed causes like these at school fetes or local community festivals are a great way to encourage selfless service, and nurture their values of generosity and compassion. They are often also a great way to spend quality family time together!

What should I do to get my kids into community centres?

Find out together what community programmes or community services are running in your local area, such as the Rotary group (this is one which is Australia wide). These organisations meet at community centres, so you can get involved with them, as well as checking out notice boards at the centre for other events and groups when you visit.

They will build Self-Confidence

Karate is the perfect training environment for children to build confidence and self- esteem. Even though karate does not condone violence, it does teach children to defend themselves in the event they are attacked. This empowers children who don’t have a lot of confidence and may even be the target of schoolyard bullies. Knowing that they can both protect themselves and stand up for themselves can significantly boost their confidence.

They will develop Resilience

Karate Classes & Lessons develops resilience by helping children overcome set backs and accept and tackle new challenges. They develop skills to understand the difference between failing and giving up. The dojo (training hall) is a place where we are encouraged to try new skills, knowing that we must be prepared to make mistakes and appreciate that there is no progress without first trying. We train and we learn through making mistakes without judgement, knowing full well that this is how we learn to build new skills, and overcome set backs, and become more resilient individuals.

They will develop Persistence

Karate training develops a 'never give up' attitude. Children that do karate learn to be persistent by taking on challenges and overcoming obstacles. They learn to set a task or goal, and focus on its achievement until it is achieved. Persistence is a valuable life skill that can translate into school work, community participation, and of course lead onto far greater outcomes after the child leaves school to enter the work force. This is especially relevant in karate training with how the grading system has been set up. Every belt achieved is a new level of growth on a child’s karate journey. It takes setting the goal, understanding what it will take to reach it, and having the discipline and motivation to stay focused and take action in the pursuit of the goal. As the saying goes, persistence will always beat resistance!

They will develop Independent Thinking

When a child feels confident they value themselves and what they will stand for. Karate trained children will be a lot less susceptible to peer pressure, especially when it involves negative thinking and activity that they know is not going to be helpful. They will develop a 'follow the herd’ mentality. Children who are strong enough mentally are more inclined to make their own good choices. This is so critical in todays society where so many good children just want to be a part of the ‘group’ and may do anything to gain the approval of their peers.

They will develop a Happy Positive Disposition

Above all, regular karate training will provide children a sense of inner peace, a calm like attitude and will generally have a much happier disposition. Feeling good about themselves, having a positive mental attitude, a quiet yet resounding confidence, all combined will provide a healthy outlook. Small issues will remain small. Larger challenges will be looked at with a stronger mind set and challenges will be accepted with bravery and courage.

Are art classes for your kid(s)?

Do your children love painting and drawing?
They might enjoy going to art classes and learning new creative skills. Art classes can give your child the opportunity to try a number of creative kids activities including pottery, craft, drawing and painting which they might not get to try at home or school.
Some of the benefits include:

Is your child the active type? If he or she has difficulty sitting still and concentrating, they might prefer more physical activities for kids including sports or dance. Art classes are great for quieter children who enjoy sitting and focusing for a reasonable period.

Arts and crafts can be done at home from any age. Even very young babies can enjoy finger painting but formal art classes generally start around age 3 and can continue as after school programmes or extracurricular courses throughout childhood.

If your child is about to go to their first art classes, make sure they are wearing old clothes that, you don’t mind them getting dirty and preferably a painting smock. You may need to provide equipment or art supplies so it is always a good idea to check with your child’s teacher.

Get your kids to start art classes next term!

A Leap into Early Dance: Why It's Beneficial for Your Child

When children engage in dance activities, they're not just learning to move to music; they're developing a whole host of skills that are crucial for their growth and development. From the physical benefits like improved coordination, balance, and flexibility, to cognitive perks such as better concentration and memory, dance offers a holistic developmental package. For parents and carers in Australia, enrolling your child in pre-school dance classes can be a step towards nurturing a well-rounded individual.

Dance also offers a unique social environment for children. It's a place where they can meet others with similar interests, learn to work as part of a team, and develop their communication skills. For many kids, their dance class becomes a community where they feel valued and included. This sense of belonging is crucial for their emotional and social development.

Unveiling the Joy of Jazz and Ballet Dancing

Jazz dancing, with its lively music and dynamic moves, is a fantastic way to introduce kids to the world of dance. It encourages children to express themselves freely, teaching them that movement can be a powerful form of self-expression. Jazz classes often involve a variety of techniques and routines, ensuring that children remain engaged and excited about learning. As they master new moves, kids develop a sense of achievement and confidence that can transfer to other areas of their life.

Jazz dancing isn't just about individual expression; it's also about rhythm and timing, skills that are beneficial in many day-to-day activities. For young Australian children, engaging in Jazz dance classes can be a fun way to develop these essential skills while enjoying the freedom and creativity that the dance style offers.

Ballet, on the other hand, is often seen as the foundation of dance. It teaches children about discipline, technique, and the importance of hard work. Ballet classes focus on developing strength, flexibility, and control, providing children with a strong physical foundation for any future dance or athletic pursuits. Moreover, Ballet introduces kids to the concept of storytelling through dance, allowing them to explore their imagination and creativity in new and exciting ways.

For Australian parents considering Ballet for their children, it's more than just dance; it's an opportunity for kids to learn about cultural stories, musical appreciation, and artistic expression. Ballet can be a magical experience for children, offering them a world where they can be princes, princesses, or whatever their hearts desire, all while learning the valuable life lessons of persistence, dedication, and resilience.

Reading poetry aloud helps children develop an awareness of the sounds of words through rhyme, rhythm and repetition. Other language and linguistic techniques such as imagery and metaphor bring stories to life in the mind of a child. These images and rhymes can help children learn new words, become stronger readers and extend their vocabulary.

These days, poetry struggles to find it's place in a primary school classroom. However, poetry is fundamental in learning vocal expression and reading aloud. Poetry plays a key role in speech and drama classes, where children learn to use expression and add meaning to the stories they are telling through poetry.

If you're looking for a poem to read today, our students love the poems in Roald Dahl's "Revolting Rhymes", Annette Kosseris' "Giggles and Woes and Anything Goes", and Shel Silverstein's "Every Thing On It".

Yoga is excellent at counteracting these pressures. When kids can grasp techniques of relaxation, inner fulfillment, and self-health, they are gifted with the ability to charter life’s challenging waters with a little more comfort, and a little less stress. Children can benefit from a plethora of advantages yoga therapy provides them, and probably more so than the way it helps adults as children are more open to change, their mindset is young and can more easily be guided in another direction.

Yoga therapy works with the seasons, using the meridian energy lines (think acupuncture with exercise) is when we work on specific needs, to bring balance, connection to our minds and bodies.

Kids’ Yoga Builds Confidence

In today’s ambitious environment, where achievements account for so much, kids might feel at times they do not live up to expectations when they can’t compete with their peers. Specific yoga moves enhances confidence and courage and allows children to accept and understand that each one’s body is different and that it is okay to have different learning abilities. Even simple yoga steps, like being able to touch the toes to building up to a “cool” pose, after practice and reaching their own goal, drives a sense of achievement and self-fulfillment.

Yoga Promotes a Stronger and Healthier Body

With a consistent practice that involves stretches, breathing exercises, and various poses, yoga  strengthens the body and boosts coordination, flexibility and balance. Since children’s yoga enhances blood flow, stimulates motor development, and increases flexibility, it leads to a decrease in the risk of injury that could be sustained during several other physical activities such as sports. According to several studies conducted globally, a staggering 97% of teachers noticed a marked improvement in their students’ strength after regular yoga sessions.

Yoga Enhances Concentration

While yoga helps to increase attention, it can also boost the right kind of behavior as well. For instance, incorporating fun yoga sessions at home or even between classes in school helps kids to build better concentration and focus skills, which fosters better learning as a result.

Breathing Helps to Reduce Anxiety

When breathing is controlled, it motivates relaxation while at the same time increasing lung capacity, providing for an increase in energy levels and stimulating the body’s release of happy hormones. So kids feel calm, relaxed, and more in control as opposed to when their stress levels are high. Regardless of a child’s age, kids’ yoga helps them comprehend how they can employ breathing exercises to decrease anxiety if and when they are stressed out. When kids are more in control, they are calmer, and they feel more reassured.

Yoga Teaches Kids Mindfulness

Kids’ yoga helps to introduce mindfulness to children because the exercises align the mind and body. Often, children’s yoga  sessions include stories to keep engagement levels high, and all my sessions are set with intention to include education and an inspirational message about confidence building, self-acceptance, self-worth, body awareness, respect, love and other important life skills or lessons.

Building positive mindsets will help transform kids’ behaviors and more importantly, will help them reduce stress by finding their peaceful inner sanctuary.

Yoga is fast becoming a popular self-regulation tool because it teaches kids how to manage anxiety and find happiness in whatever they do, which is why around the world, more schools are incorporating fun and interactive yoga breaks between classes. Besides nourishing children by teaching them how to become more emotionally resilient, yoga encourages inclusivity and also helps kids strengthen their minds and bodies. 1. Discipline and Focus

Karate instills discipline and focus in children from a young age. Through the structured routines and rules of the dojo (Karate school), kids learn the importance of listening, following instructions, and adhering to guidelines. This discipline transcends the training mats and influences their behavior in daily life—enhancing their attentiveness, perseverance, and ability to set and achieve goals.

2. Respect and Courtesy

Respect is a cornerstone of Karate philosophy. Children are taught to respect their Karate coaches and instructors, their fellow students, and themselves. This ethos of respect extends to their everyday interactions, teaching them to appreciate diversity, value others' opinions, and treat everyone with kindness and courtesy.

3. Confidence and Self-esteem

Karate empowers children by building their self-confidence and self-esteem. As they progress through belts and master new techniques, they gain a sense of accomplishment that boosts their confidence. They learn to believe in themselves, face challenges head-on, and overcome fears, setting a strong foundation for a successful future.

4. Physical Fitness and Well-being

Engaging in Karate improves a child's physical health and overall well-being. The training involves a combination of aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Kids develop agility, coordination, and balance, fostering a healthy lifestyle and laying the groundwork for a lifetime of good health habits.

5. Problem-solving and Critical Thinking

Karate isn't just about kicks and punches; it's a mental exercise too. Children learn to strategize, anticipate their opponent's moves, and adapt their techniques accordingly. This enhances their problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities, skills that are vital in both academic and personal spheres.

6. Setting and Achieving Goals

Karate provides a structured system of belts, giving children tangible goals to strive for. Each new belt represents progress and achievement, teaching kids the value of setting goals and working diligently to attain them. This goal-setting mentality translates into their academics and other extracurricular activities.

7. Emotional Regulation and Stress Relief

Karate encourages emotional regulation by providing an outlet for stress and pent-up energy. Children can channel their emotions positively through the martial art, which can help them manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. This emotional balance contributes to a happier, more stable child.

Conclusion

Enrolling your child in a Karate school not only equips them with self-defense skills but also enriches their life with invaluable life lessons. The guidance and mentorship from Karate coaches and instructors play a pivotal role in shaping your child's character and instilling virtues that will benefit them throughout their lives. Through discipline, respect, confidence, and physical fitness, Karate sets a strong foundation for Australian children to grow into responsible, resilient, and accomplished individuals. So, consider enrolling your child in a reputable Karate school today and watch them blossom into confident, respectful, and disciplined individuals ready to conquer life's challenges.
